Man on the Street: Sodexo’s arrival to SDSU

In addition to a new school year, South Dakota State University saw a new food service on campus as Sodexo replaced Aramark.

Senior Justin Hirsckorn noted that there was a huge price increase at the C-Store on campus. Most students said they liked the variety in the restaurants in the Union but missed Larsons changing menu.

“I’m very disappointed and let down,” sophomore Eric Boysen said. “I was so excited when I heard about the switch last year and so far have been disappointed with how thing

Brookings’ first Fall Festival brings farming to downtown

Emma Lusk and Logan Muller walk through downtown after picking flowers from Spring Creek Flowers and Eggs during the Fall Festival.

The first-ever Brookings Fall Festival was met with success last Saturday, and officials hope to continue the event in the future.

The festival included pumpkin painting, bouncy castles, vendors, food trucks and live entertainment on Main Street. Students and families in attendance said they enjoyed the vendor options this year and would return if the festival occ

Fake IDs continue to soar in Brookings

Brookings law enforcement officials and bar owners say they are seeing an increase in the use of fake identification cards compared to previous years.

Officials say the lack of house parties seems to be pushing students to downtown bars. This has led to an influx in the number of calls they have been getting for assistance in determining if an ID is real.

“Even during move-in weekend we only had one call to get a house party under control,” Brookings Police Officer Jory Hart said.

Brookings Hospital is smallest in state with surgery robots

Brookings Health Systems is staying up to date on the newest medical technology available.

In 2013, Brookings got two surgical robots to help nurses and doctors during operations. The hospital uses the Mako robotic-arm for orthopedic surgeries, and the da Vinci Xi, which got a recent update in 2021, for general surgeries, operating nurse Ally Leona said.

Only four hospitals in South Dakota have this technology, including locations in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen and Brookings, with Brooki

Graduation ceremony moved off campus

South Dakota State University’s Spring Graduation will be held off campus at the Swiftel Center for the first time ever due to construction on Frost Area.

“Our top priority with commencement is to ensure that every SDSU graduate has a great experience when they receive their diploma and celebrate their academic achievements with family and friends,” Dennis Hedge, SDSU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said in a press release. “The spirit and tradition of SDSU commencement will be

Wacipi promotes “healing through education” at annual event

South Dakota State University’s annual Wacipi is ready to go for April 1 and 2 in the Volstroff Ballroom in the Student Union.

The Wacipi event features Native American dancers, food and other cultural staples. American Indian Student Association (AISA) club president Dallas Kelso, a sophomore English education major, said this is a great opportunity to show off culture to the community.

“For AISA, this event means a lot, we enjoy putting (it) on and the exposure from the Wacipi event,” Kelso

Orientation director by day, album collector by night

Adam Karnopp is known at SDSU for his job as the university orientation director, but he has another title at home. He is the proud owner of about 13,000 albums.

Karnopp has been listening to all kinds of music since he was young, from his dad’s rock’n’roll to his sister’s “Grease” soundtrack. In third grade, he bought his first cassette single: “Ice Ice Baby,” by Vanilla Ice.

In high school and college, he became more serious about his collection.

“I inherited a record player that also had a

Permanent jewelry booth opens this weekend

Valentine’s Day is celebrated early this year with a pop-up shop in the Old Sanctuary Banquet Facility Saturday, Feb. 4 starting at 10 a.m. One of the newest booths at the event is Midnight Spark, a permanent jewelry business out of Sioux Falls.

Permanent jewelry functions similarly to regular jewelry, but instead of a clasp, the metal is welded together with a jump ring.

Caitlin Mullen, founder of Midnight Spark, said the name comes from the spark when the two pieces get welded together. Mull

Board of Regents and state House write legislation against drag shows

The South Dakota Board of Regents is in the midst of creating a new policy regarding events involving minors on campus.

The change came about after a controversial drag show on campus was advertised as “family friendly.” State lawmakers soon-after expressed their outrage by taking to social media.

The Board of Regents held a special meeting in December which led to all events hosted by South Dakota’s six public universities to be approved by the Regents in order for minors to attend.
